Ethical question, please advise!
« on: March 25, 2009, 06:47:56 pm »
I have a quick question,

Is it unethical to show a video podcast on your blog,  of a series that you did not produce?   Assuming you give credit to the source, and show them where the podcast came from?

Thanks in advance!

First you have to consider whether or not the producer of the original content has explicit copyright intentions. Does the video or the website where the video originated indicate creative commons or all rights reserved? If there is an explicit mention of the rules for sharing then you should follow those guidelines.

You could also contact the producer of the original content, let them know what your doing, and see what they say.

I definitely wouldn't put the repurposed content on a site that has advertising without direct permission from the creator. Lots of people do it but I don't think that's right.

I would see if the work is Creative Commons licensed. If it is, they outline specific rules of what you can do with the content.

However, if the content is embeddable, go for it! The authors wants you to share it with your community.

I am with Rob as long as if you do not re upload the video, and only embed it. I am sure the content provider would be fine with it. As long as he still gets stats from each viewer, of course linking back to his site is just good manners.

Now with that being said, If you run a site about porn,Tobacco, alcohol or other questionable things. Then it would be best to ask permission because they may not want to be linked to such things.
