I've just stumbled on the new Yahoo Audio Player (beta). It seems like a first-class prize to me.
One line of code in the page where one OR MORE audio files reside -- that's it!
The player finds the audio file, puts a button in front of it and a tab lower left of the page. Click the button and file starts playing.
If the page holds more than one audio file, the player puts a button in front of each. Choose! Or click on the grey tab (lower left) and select "Play List" to choose.
Simple and amazing!
