Blubrry Podcast Statistics Algorithm
« on: August 15, 2007, 02:50:10 pm »
We wanted to give some insight on how we track downloads in our podcast statistics system. Our algorithm is very simple and one of the things we look at is how many times a file is requested from the same IP address. If someone from the same IP address requests an episode more than 3 times then it is not counted as a unique download.

What about those behind a firewall? Say at a college. They would all be from a single IP address, but possibly multiple user agents. I don't know how many ISPs would do that, but it is a possibility. Do you handle cases like that or do you just leave that as a margin of error?

We don't have a way to determine those numbers. And the folks who say they do either a) really don't or b) place some kind of a tracking device inside files they are distributing.

We provide statistics on every request for the file but the algorithm will be applied to the unique numbers. So if you have people downloading from behind a firewall that only reveals a single ip then your actual audience is somewhere in between your unique downloads and total downloads.

There are always going to be issues with stats that make it impossible to hit an exact number that truly represents the number of people who consumed your media. We have some corporations considering caching media inside their firewalls from approved podcast producers. Things like that will make getting exact stats tougher but we're committed to working on the things that are attainable while respecting the rights of audiences not to have any kind of DRM related to these files.
