Title: Podcast feed problems
Post by: L. Gordon Brewer, Jr. on February 16, 2018, 05:17:34 pm
So I recently added an SSL certificate to my site.  I used using the "Really Simple SSL" plugin to redirect everything.  Everything on my site is working correctly, but it appears that my podcast feed was somehow corrupted or damaged.  (I noticed that new episodes of my podcast were no longer showing up in the iTunes Store for the last two, but they do show up for subscribers)

When I checked the feed in the "WC3 feed validation" ( Apple recommends using http://validator.w3.org/feed/ to validate your feeds.) I get this message:

"Not a gzipped file (Server response declares Content-Encoding: gzip; misconfigured server?)"

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks!

Just re-ran that WC Validator.  This is the response I got:

Sorry

The WC3 validator is old and hasn't been updated in years. It's fine for some things but it tends to throw out a lot of useless warnings. I ran your feed thru both Podbase and CastFeedValidator, which are much more up-to-date validators and everything came back fine. Are you having a specific issue with the feed?

Thanks this is good to know!  It is just taking a long time (2 weeks or more)for the most recent podcast episodes to show up in the iTunes store. None of my podcast episodes for February have shown up.  I have just been concerned the feed might have been corrupted since I added an SSL certificate to my website.

I found the Apple Podcasts directory listing for your show here:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-practice-of-therapy-podcast-with-gordon-brewer-lmft/id1275168851?mt=2

The listing is still working off of the non-secure feed URL here:
http://practiceoftherapy.com/feed/podcast

When I enter the non-secure feed URL into Google Chrome, the non-secure automatically redirects to the secure URL, which is good. But Apple Podcasts isn't picking that up for some reason. Go to https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/ and log in with your Apple ID. Click the artwork for your show and then click the "refresh feed” link. Hopefully, it'll check the non-secure URL and see that it's forwarding and update automatically to the secure URL. These refresh commands don't happen instantaneously, so it may take up to 24 hours for any changes to be seen.

Post by: L. Gordon Brewer, Jr. on February 19, 2018, 10:59:55 am
Thanks Shawn... When I go to iTunes podcast connect I am not seeing a specific "refresh feed" link anywhere. Here is what it shows:

"We had difficulty reading this feed. handshake alert: unrecognized_name

The Practice of Therapy Podcast with Gordon Brewer, LMFT

URL
http://practiceoftherapy.com/feed/podcast/

Status
Error

Last Refresh
1/31/2018 9:25 PM

Mirror URL
https://pcr.apple.com/id1275168851"

So I click on the URL for the feed and changed the http to https. Saved it. Then I get this message:  "Can’t read your feed."

I'm not sure what to do next...  Do I delete the podcast from iTunes and start over? (Don't really want to do that...)

So any other ideas?

Gordon

Don't remove the Apple Podcasts listing and start over. Is your SSL provider on Apple's approved list?

Okay, not sure why but having trouble accessing the iTunes discussion forum.  Everytime I try to login it I get

"This page isn’t working discussions.apple.com redirected you too many times. Try clearing your cookies.ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS"

SO... I just read this article from blubrry: https://create.blubrry.com/manual/syndicating-your-podcast-rss-feeds/changing-your-podcast-rss-feed-address-url/

I have done the 301 redirect, but iTunes is still saying it can't access my feed.  Should I do the iTunes new feed URL (last resort method)?  I see that there is a way to do that in the settings of the Blubrry Press plugin under "iTunes".  Should I give it a try?  The warning it gives kind of scares me...

Okay I think I have discovered where the problem is but do not know how to fix it.

When I looked at the "mirror url" that was given in the iTunes Connect dashboard shows is this:  https://pcr.apple.com/id1275168851

When I click on that, it gives an incorrect feed.  It has https://practiceoftherapy.com/practiceoftherapy/podcast/feed.  Of course the extra "practiceoftherapy" should not be there.  And I don't know where and how that is happening.

I also noticed too that the bookmark for my Wordpress login had done the same thing.

Not sure if it is a Wordpress issue, Blubrry issue, iTunes issue or what.

I talked to one of my podcast subscribers today and the latest episodes are showing up for them in the iTunes podcast app.  So the feed is getting out there for those folks.  The latest episodes are just not showing up in the iTunes store which is frustrating.

Again, any clues as to how to approach this would be great.  Should I just ignore it an hope the feed corrects itself?? Do the "iTunes new feed URL" function in Blubrry?

Thanks for your patience with this discussion...

Sorry. The link I meant to give you earlier to contact Apple should've been:
http://itunespartner.apple.com/en/podcasts/overview

If you plug any Apple Podcasts listing URL into the Podbase podcast validator at https://podba.se/ it'll tell you what that listing is using for its source feed. Right now, it says your listing is working off of this feed URL:
http://practiceoftherapy.com/feed/podcast/

When I load that feed URL into Google Chrome, it redirects here:
https://practiceoftherapy.com/practiceoftherapy/feed/podcast/

It's odd that the base URL in front of the feed becomes https://practiceoftherapy.com/practiceoftherapy/ after the redirect. How was the 301 redirect applied to your website? Did you do it yourself or did someone else do it for you? Also, you mentioned using GoDaddy. Do you know if you're using GoDaddy's premium security services on your site? We've had some instances lately where that security service from GoDaddy has been blocking requests from Apple Podcasts.

I'm using a Wordpress plugin, "Really Simple SSL" to do the 301 redirect; it was recommended by Go Daddy.  The SSL is their basic service which is what was recommended by them.

So obviously, something is happening with the redirect.

Should I switch to another plugin?

Thanks...

I'm curious to know this. Go to PowerPress >> Settings. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Tell me if any of these are checked:
Category Podcasting
Custom Channels
Post Type Podcasting
Taxonomy Podcasting

DO NOT check anything that's not already checked. I'm just curious to know if any of them are checked now.

So yes, Category Podcasting and Custom Channels are checked.  The other two are not.

Sorry for all the random questions but I'm trying to get a more accurate idea of what's happening within your site.

When you go to PowerPress >> Settings, Advanced Mode >> Feeds tab, please list any feed URLs that are being displayed there.

Thanks for providing that information.

Your iTunes Store listing is still working off of this podcast feed URL:
http://practiceoftherapy.com/feed/podcast/

When I load that URL into Google Chrome it redirects to the https version of the feed automatically, which is the desired outcome:
https://practiceoftherapy.com/feed/podcast/

I ran the https version thru a couple validators and everything is coming up fine. It's so strange that Apple isn't detecting the URL on its own.

Can you copy the contents of your site's .htaccess file into a reply here?

Also, if you haven't yet, do try filing a support ticket with iTunes Support ticket by clicking the Contact Us link here:

A couple other things to try.

Go to PowerPress >> Settings, Advanced Mode >> iTunes and look for the New Feed URL setting and then copy/pase the https version of the URL into that. (You'll see some warnings about doing this, but it's OK.)

When I added SSL to my own podcast site, I used a free plugin called Easy HTTPS (SSL) Redirection that redirected all of my site traffic to https. In my case, Apple Podcasts updated itself automatically. You might want to try this plugin in conjunction with or in place of any https redirection tools you're using now.

Thanks for all your help with this Shawn.  I've done what you suggested and also sent a support ticket to iTunes.  Just waiting to hear back from that.  I'll put an update here when I get that.

My hunch is that it will correct itself in time.  As I mentioned. people that are subscribed to the podcast in iTunes are getting the most recent episodes  It is just that the most recent episodes (anything after I added the SSL certificate, the first week of February)are not showing up in the iTunes store.

And maybe the New Feed URL setting change in Powerpress will help too.

The fact that existing subscribers are still getting episodes is a good sign that the redirect is working as it should. Do report back here when you hear something back from Apple.

Okay, so finally got an answer from Apple:

"Hello Gordon,

I’m following up about your ongoing podcast issue.

My engineers informed me that there is a java communication error related to your certificate/website that may be related to the use of RC4. Please work with your host/certificate server to resolve these issues. This is all of the information they were able to provide to me based on the error messages they are receiving on their side."

So how can I fix this?

Thanks,

Confirm that your SSL provider is on Apple's approved list:
https://create.blubrry.com/manual/your-web-site/secure-ssl-podcast-website/

If it is, contact your web hosting provider and give them the information you received from Apple to see if they can resolve the issue. Alternatively, you can try using Blubrry's Podcast Mirror service for your feed instead:  https://podcastmirror.com/

So dumb question.  My podcast hosting is done through Libsyn.  My website hosting is through GoDaddy.  I contacted GoDaddy, they essentially said it was a problem with my feed and not the SSL Certificate.  So should I be talking with Libsyn instead of GoDaddy?

The WC3 validator is not up to date as far as supporting HTTPS feeds, they also do not know about the changes in the iTunes specs. We do not recommend validating feeds with http://validator.w3.org/feed/.

As Shawn as noted, your feed http://practiceoftherapy.com/feed/podcast/ (what iTunes directory has for ID 1275168851). Your feed is successfully redirecting to https://practiceoftherapy.com/feed/podcast/ - Why iTunes has not picked up on this redirection is the question we are trying to solve.

Problem: Starfield Technologies, Inc. SSL Certificate from your server does not have a root certificate (also referred to as the ssl cert bundle) does not include one of the 8 root certificates that Apple supports. (ref https://create.blubrry.com/manual/your-web-site/secure-ssl-podcast-website/) "Starfield Technologies" is a Godaddy SSL cert brand, and I believe it has a root certificate that is in the list, it is just simply not bundled on your server. In other words, whom ever helped you setup your SSL cert on your server did not use the correct bundle certificate which means iTunes will not accept your SSL cert as-is. The Starfield bundles are located here: https://certs.secureserver.net/repository You need to contact whom ever set up your SSL for guidance which is correct for your SSL cert. My best guess is you need to use sf_bundle-g2-g1.crt, again not sure.

If SSL is over your head, I would suggest signing up for a free PodcastMirror.com feed, this would solve this problem quickly as the SSL certificate that PodcastMirror.com uses is iTunes compatible.
Title: Re: Podcast feed problems
Post by: angelo on March 15, 2018, 07:10:14 am
Upon further inspection of your SSL, I found one other possible issue...

You are using a "Multi-Domain (SAN) Certificate", and your alternate domains don't match the root domain, which is osmanhope.com. I am not sure of the ramifications of this but with the Java library Apple uses to pull podcast feeds, this may cause an issue, not 100% sure. You will need to contact Apple to see if they support SAN certificates.

Okay, so I got this from iTunes  :( :-[:

"iTunes Store Welcome

Dear Podcast Owner

The podcast located at the URL shown below has been blocked or removed from the iTunes directory as a result of technical problems with the feed.

MZPodcastEmail.NameColon The Practice of Therapy Podcast with Gordon Brewer, LMFT
MZPodcastEmail.FeedURLColon http://practiceoftherapy.com/feed/podcast/

If you wish to reactivate your podcast in the iTunes directory, please troubleshoot your feed and check the functionality of each episode. To test your podcast, start iTunes, select Subscribe to Podcast from the Advanced menu, and enter your feed URL in the dialog box. If you can successfully subscribe to your podcast and listen to each of the episodes, you can reactivate your podcast by resubmitting the feed using the Submit a Podcast page, https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/publishPodcast.

For more information on troubleshooting feed problems and controlling the appearance of your podcast on iTunes, please see the podcast FAQ at http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/faq.html and technical specification at http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/techspecs.html.

Sincerely,

The iTunes Store Team"

So one solution I thought I should try, which I have done, is re-submitting a new feed directly from Libsyn instead of from my website.  Now I need to know how to set up the Blubrry plugin to be compatible with that.

I see that there is the "Import Podcast" feature.  Should I use this?  Again, I am trying to preserve what I have already.

Thanks!

Title: Re: Podcast feed problems
Post by: Shawn Thorpe on March 19, 2018, 11:31:53 am
PowerPress doesn't have a continuous import function. The Import Tool built in to PowerPress is meant to be used as a one-and-done precedure for importing an existing podcast into a WordPress site. The only option that'll work for using both WordPress/PowerPress and your Libsyn feed together will be to manually post your episodes in both locations.
Title: Re: Podcast feed problems
Post by: L. Gordon Brewer, Jr. on March 19, 2018, 12:01:25 pm
So I think I have been doing that anyway... I upload the audio to Libsyn and fill in the details of the show in Libsyn; copy the direct download url from Libsyn to the blog post/show notes into the Media Url for the Blubrry podcast plugin at the bottom of the post.  Then publish the blog post.   It seems like I might be duplicating efforts.   I like the fact that the player is at the top of the blog post when I publish.

I guess the big question is do I need to change any of the settings in Blubrry now that I have switched to using the Libsyn Feed directly to iTunes.

Thanks for all your effort with me on all this!!
Title: Re: Podcast feed problems

The best thing to retain all subscribers when moving a podcast RSS feed is to redirect the current feed URL to the new feed URL:
https://create.blubrry.com/manual/syndicating-your-podcast-rss-feeds/changing-your-podcast-rss-feed-address-url/

You'll also want to put a link to the Libsyn-hosted feed in your PowerPress settings by doing this:
1.) Log in to your WordPress site
2.) Hover over the PowerPress link in the lefthand sidebar and click on Custom Channels in the popup menu
3.) Click the Edit link underneath Podcast (default channel)
4.) Copy/paste the Libsyn feed URL into the FeedBurner Feed URL field (don't worry, this has nothing to do with FeedBurner)

Doing this will change any PowerPress-generated links to your RSS feed to point to the Libsyn feed. Note: this has nothing to do with the redirect information in the above link. If possible, you should do both of these things.
