404 is HTTP/HTTPS protocol code, it encompasses everything that has an http:// or https:// in the address bar above, images, xml, html, media, etc... Again read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_404

To clear it up a bit, a 404 page is served when the address you were trying to go to doesn't exist on the server.
