HTTPS Versus HTTP For Feeds and Media Links
« on: September 10, 2015, 04:08:42 pm »
This is our current HTTPS Guidance as of 9-10-15

Can I use HTTPS for my Podcast RSS Feed?

Some Desktop Apps and some TV apps will have problems with https feeds. The good news is a majority of the podcast consumption has shifted to Android/iOS apps, which have SSL support built into them.

More specifically with https and iTunes, make sure you use an SSL certificate chain file that includes an SHA1 signature (should be the last signature in the chain). iTunes feed pulling system does not support SHA2 chain certificates (hopefully they will soon though). If you do not understand what this means, then you should not use https.

Can I use HTTPS for my Podcast Media Links?

Media URLs in https can be a problem for applications that do not use an SSL library. This is a common problem for many desktop podcast apps and some apps found on TV devices.

Current Recommendation: For the most part HTTPS can be used, you give up compatibility with a small number of podcast apps  but more importantly your SSL chain file must include SHA1
