301 Redirect
« on: August 12, 2015, 11:57:51 am »
Hello:
my podcast:  http://www.stateofshakespeare.com has disappeared from both iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-state-of-shakespeare/id478609859) and Blubrry (https://publish.blubrry.com/settings/listing.php).  iTunes has recommended a 301 redirect.

My current feed that Blubrry is using (and is not validating):  http://stateofshakespeare.com/?feed=podcast
The feed that iTunes recommends (and is validating):  http://stateofshakespeare.com/?feed=rss2

How can I change these?  And can I get old episodes to appear on iTunes and Blubrry.

Thanks,
Jim

Are you using the PowerPress plugin with your website? If so, are you using the latest version?

Also, both of the feeds you linked to are timing out when I try them in Feed Validator. This is probably the source of your problem if those feeds are/were being sent to iTunes and/or Blubrry.

As far as creating a 301 redirect, you need to gain access to your WordPress site's .htaccess file. If you're using the Yoast SEO plugin, there's an easy way to do it:

Thanks for this.  I am using PowerPress 4.2.4.  I am not using the Yoast Plugin, but the All In One SEO, could this be the problem?

My "RSS2" feed was working last week, but now it is not.  Hmmm...do I need to create a new Feed?  Or can I get it to work again?

Obviously, I am unversed in this - and am aware of the .htaccess file, just don't know where to find it.

You're using a rather old version of PowerPress. You really should upgrade to the latest version for best results. If your WordPress installation isn't automatically prompting you to update it, you can download the latest version and update it manually:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/powerpress/

The .htaccess file is located on the root of your website's server. You might be able to access it using an FTP client, or your website hosting provider may have a way to access it thru their control panel. But, before you go looking for that, you should work on ensuring that your WordPress and all of your plugins (including PowerPress) are up to date.

OK, that's better. Now, log into your WordPress dashboard. Go to PowerPress >> Settings, advanced mode >> Feeds. Scroll down to where it says "Podcast feeds" and copy the URL next to "Special Podcast only Feed" into a reply so we can see what it says.

OK, so now we know what's the URL of your default PowerPress feed. Have you filled out all of the details in the PowerPress >> Settings, advanced mode >> Feed and iTunes tabs?

Also, for some reason, your feed URL isn't coming up as accessible. Are you using any caching or feed redirection plugins?

Here is a list of my plugins:

All In One SEO Pack 2.2.7.1
Allow Word/Powerpoint/Excel file uploads 1.1.1
AZIndex 0.8.1
Better WordPress Google XML Sitemaps 1.3.1
Blubrry PowerPress 6.0.3
Column Shortcodes 0.6.6
Duplicate Post 2.6
Google Analytics Dashboard for WP 4.8.1.3
Google Doc Embedder 2.5.19
Google Docs Viewer 1.0
Jetpack by WordPress.com 3.6.1
Multicons 2.1
Open in New Window Plugin 2.3

PayPal Donations 1.9.0
Table of Contents Plus 1507
Wiziapp 3.2.8
Wordfence Security 6.0.15
WP-SpamShield 1.9.5.5

(Since i'm not sure what caching or feed redirection plugins would be - I just showed all!)  Hope this helps.

Thanks

I should say, I've filled out ONLY the basic information asked from iTunes and the Feed tabs.

Please email me cio [at] rawvoice dot com the contact at Apple who told you which feed to use. That in itself is a problem, they should be aware that the podcast feed is the feed you should be using. The rss2 feed, while it may work, also includes blog posts which is not what you should use for iTunes (according to Apple's podcast specifications).

The podcast feed (http://stateofshakespeare.com/?feed=podcast) is prematurely ending, an indication that either something is crashing on your server (a theme or more than likely a plugin) or your server is running out of memory. Switching to the blog feed may fix this now but more than likely this problem will come back. You really need to figure out what is causing the issue first.

More than likely this problem started after you updated a theme or plugin, which may give you a hint as to what theme or plugin is causing the problem.

To diagnose, use these steps: http://create.blubrry.com/resources/powerpress/using-powerpress/diagnosing-feed-andor-player-issues-with-powerpress/

When the feed is working, it will end with </xml>. Currently at the bottom of your feed you can see it is starting a  new <description> section and then ends prematurely.

Please let me know what theme or plugin is causing your issue.

If you are down to only your theme and just PowerPress plugin and you still have the feed prematurely ending, then it may be a server memory issue. The only way to solve that is to change the "items per feed" setting in PowerPress > Feeds section. The WordPress recommended value for this is 10.

Okay, so I think it was a PlugIn called WP-Spamshield.  Once I deactivated it, the feed validated.... http://stateofshakespeare.com/?feed=podcast

Now how do I get it back on iTunes?  Do I resubmit, or should I send them an email telling them that the feed is valid again?

Thanks,
Jim

Before you do anything else, check your iTunes artwork file. Podbase says your current image is 600x600 px and the current iTunes spec is a minimum of 1400x1400 px. You have to get that fixed before iTunes will put the feed back into the store. Once that's done, you can try resubmitting the feed to the iTunes Store and see what happens. If you get a message saying that feed has already been submitted, you can file a support ticket with the iTunes podcast staff here:
