Changing RSS links
« on: January 28, 2015, 07:33:18 am »
I have enabled the iTunes and RSS links. I am using a category feed so my feed is at domain/category/podcasts/feed and not domain/feed/podcast. Is it possible to change the RSS links to point to the category feed?

Not yet. This was one of the problems that was causing delays for 6.0's release. If you were to pick 2 podcast categories for a podcast, then we would not know which subscribe links to provide, or have to provide both. This gets even more complicated for those podcasters who have 10+ category podcasts.

We're still working out a plan to prioritize the podcast categories, that way which ever has the highest priority would be the one used. We're still testing this idea out theoretically though. What are your thoughts on this problem?

Obviously if you only have one podcast category then you would not have to worry about this problem.

There should be some way of overriding the default. If you have multiple category feeds then you need to select one but if you do something that means your default feed is not domain/feed/podcast then you are stuffed. In my case I want to avoid using it because it contains a mixture of audio and video and I may want multiple category feeds in the future. If you can set the iTunes url then why not the RSS feed?

If you have two "podcast" categories, and you create an episode that goes into both categories, that is the problem.

Why not allow for an override as with iTunes url?

Right, but that only would work for 1 category. It may solve your problem but it doesn't solve the problem for most folks who use category podcasting for 2 or more shows.

At present you can override this behavior for the sidebar widget and the embed in the subscribe page. The only complication is with the links below the player. We'll have a solution at some point, just bare with us as we figure out the best way to solve the problem.

Another option I've been playing around with is a global setting that makes a particular category feed your default podcast feed. Doing this would then make a 1 to 1 mapping for the default podcast and all other podcast category feeds are simply treated as additional feeds.

I have found a bug in the logic where it was not detecting that you had a category selected. If you use category podcasting and you always select 1 category then the next update will fix that.

Possibly as soon as this Friday. I'd you know how to manually install plugins, you can download the current beta "development version". Link: https://wordpress.org/plugins/powerpress/developers/

I didn't expect to be posting here again but all is not well with the links. As you know I am using a category and hence the feed should be at http://derekcheshire.com/category/podcasts/feed and the iTunes feed at https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/derek-cheshire-international/id961102571?mt=2&ls=1

On my front page I have a box that lists the last 4 posts and there I have RSS = http://derekcheshire.com/feed/podcast iTunes = as above so RSS = wrong iTunes = correct
On my blog page I have RSS = http://derekcheshire.com/feed/podcast iTunes = as above so again RSS = wrong iTunes = correct
If I click on the post title I have RSS = http://derekcheshire.com/category/podcasts/feed iTunes = itpc://derekcheshire.com/category/podcasts/feed so RSS = correct iTunes = wrong

At no point do I seem to have both feeds correct!! Is there anything I can do other than disable the feed links in settings?

Until we come up with a solution that lets you use categories exclusively to podcast, your stuck.

How many podcast categories do you have by the way?

Just one at the moment.

It would not be quite so bad if the iTunes feed was correct.
