iTunes New Feed URL
« on: March 11, 2009, 10:17:29 am »
I set up a new feed in Feedburner so that I could have a different name for my podcast than I do for my main blog/podcast feed. I put the new feed into Powerpress, but iTunes isn't recognizing it and the old title is still there.

I pinged iTunes from Powerpress, and the resulting page showed that Powerpress was still pinging with the old feed URL.

Any ideas?

Powerpress Pings iTunes with the FEEDID. The printed Feed URL is the feed that iTunes returned as what they associate with your podcast. You will need to edit your old feed that iTunes is currently pulling and add a special tag called <itunes:new-feed-url>URL</itunes:new-feed-url> (take extra caution this is correct) or setup a redirect with a 301 (permanently moved) to your new feed location.

Isn't that what the "new feed url" option in the Powerpress settings is for? I thought that added the new feed url tag. Doesn't it?

The New Feed URL goes into the old or previous feed, letting iTunes know what the new feed URL is. If your old feed is on blogger, the blogger feed is where you want to add the new feed url tag to. iTunes will never pickup the new feed url value from your new feed without some help from either the old feed including the new feed url tag or a HTTP 301 redirect to the new feed url.

Hey there. I ran into this same issue. I had a few episodes of my podcast entered into iTunes. I decided it'd be a good idea to burn the feed. So I went to Feedburner and then sent my feed there. Everything is fine except fort he fact that iTunes keeps telling me that it appears that my feed has already been submitted. So I went to powerpress and entered my new feed URL http://feeds.feedburner.com/AskAdamLeague into the new feed URL field.
I checked out Feedburner to see if the XML document has changed. Should I be seeing the new feed tags for iTunes? I tried submitting the new feed to iTunes and I still keep getting the submission error. Any help would be appreciated.

FeedBurner really complicates things. You may want to contact FeedBurner for support for their feeds, or not use feedBurner then we can help you since you're using your PowerPress feed.

Hi,

I just moved from PodPress to your new Wordpress plugin, PowerPress.
When I used Podpress for WordPress my podcast feed for iTunes was at:

http://mousechat.net/?feed=podcast

Now that I moved to PowerPress it appears my Podcast RSS2 feed is at:

http://mousechat.net/index.php/feed/

I guess when I post my next podcast I will know if there is a problem if it does not appear on iTunes, but I would like to figure it out before that happens if possible.

If my podcast feed has changed what does this mean for my subscribers and past podcast shows?
 1. Will my current subscribers on iTunes and on other sites like blubrry just get my new feed like nothing has changed?  Will my past shows still be there?  Will my ratings still be there?
 2. If having a new feed for my podcast is going to cause problems, is there something I can do in the PowerPress plugin to have it submit to the feed I was using with I used PodPress for WordPress?
 3. If I am going to loose shows or subscribers using a new feed, then I would need to reactivate podpress and deactivate powerpress, unless you have some ideas.

Thanks,
Steve

Michael will be able to answer your questions. One thing though, please reply with your iTunes one-click subscription URL or your iTunes ID so we can see what feed iTunes is pulling. Without this ID/URL, we can't really tell you anything for your situation.

I just did a quick search on iTunes and your latest episode in your feed (http://mousechat.net/?feed=podcast) is in iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/mousechat-net-a-weekly-disney/id395503030

So to back up, no feed URL changed switching from PodPress to PowerPress in your situation (this is usually the case for almost everyone, remember we made PowerPress to be an upgrade to PodPress, so everything lines up)

1. Yes, because your feed didn't change.
2. No problems because you don't have a new feed.
3. I don't see a need to switch back, seeing that PowerPress is already working as-is.

If I go into PowerPress in WordPress under the "Feeds" tab  I see this:

Main RSS2 Feed: http://mousechat.net/index.php/feed/

So I am worried when I create a new podcast that my New podcasts will be sent to this feed which is different from my current podcast feed.
I guess I'll know when I post a new show on Thursday.

Thanks,
Steve

If you look just below below "Main RSS2 Feed" you should see "Special Podcast only Feed: http://mousechat.net/index.php/feed/podcast/".

The reason you see http://mousechat.net/index.php/feed/podcast/ instead of http://mousechat.net/?feed=podcast is because you've enabled "Permalinks" feature in WordPress. So you are aware...

The difference being that the second URL is Permalink friendly having no question mark in the URL.

You want to keep "Permalinks" feature on because it helps you with SEO, which places words in your media URL's rather than letters/numbers encoded with & and ?.

I went to your listing based on your iTunes ID (395503030) and your listing has your latest episode (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/id395503030). I think you're all set. Is there an episode missing?

Awesome Thanks.
And thanks for the support.
Some forums you can post a question and never hear anything.

I have not posted a new podcast since I switched to PowerPress but I will post one Thursday if all goes as planned.
So it sounds like it should be all set.

Thanks,
Steve
