blubrry WordPress feed breaks mp3 downloads in iTunes?
« on: March 14, 2009, 12:08:03 pm »
Yesterday I switched from PodPress to blubrry WP plugin and migrated everything over. I also signed up for the blubrry download statistics, but quickly realized that using that along with enabling download statistics in Feedburner created an indefinite loop that times out. So, I had to disable the download count feature in Feedburner to make it work.

Now, as far as I can tell, everything is working correctly, except downloading mp3s in iTunes. My m4v video files work fine (hosted through blip.tv), but mp3 files (hosted by me) don't, even though they work fine in my RSS feed. All iTunes tags are correct from what I can tell, too.

My iTunes and blog feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/timschmoyer
My iTunes URL is http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=258320136

Does anyone have any idea about how I can get mp3 downloads to start working in iTunes? It was working fine with PodPress. Thank you!

Hmm... maybe it's because I was tracking stats with PodPress and now that the plugin is deactivated, all of the links are broken until iTunes scans my RSS feed again. Unfortunately, that only happens ever 24 hours. I've already tried pinging it several times. No change.

Last time I tested iTunes, it took roughly 3 hours for it to update from a ping. Remember to close and re-open iTunes when you do check if it updated, becuase if you leave iTunes open it will keep a cached copy of the feed for up to 24 hours before re-fetches it. I think, and to give iTunes credit, they did this so all the folks using iTunes wouldn't flood all of our site's feeds.

Well, my feed updated in iTunes with my most recent posts, but all the previous downloads remained unchanged. The latest mp3 download works, but all the others still don't work because I'm assuming the feed in iTunes still has my old PodPress tracking links. I guess iTunes doesn't refresh the entire feed each time. So, I put in a new RSS feed in my blubrry WP plugin to change my feed from the old http://feeds.feedburner.com/timschmoyer to Google's new http://feeds2.feedburner.com/timschmoyer Hopefully that will force iTunes to do a complete refresh of my feed. Time will tell.

Try increasing the number of items per feed so your previous episodes are linked to your feed. Otherwise your local iTunes copy will use what is cached.

Anyone who subscribes to your iTunes listing now will only see the episodes that are in your feed. iTunes store doesn't keep this information, it's only the local copies of iTunes that keep previous feed items.
