Getting Started
« on: July 08, 2014, 07:24:17 pm »
I'm maintaining a church website using Real Church at Agapecc.com. I have posted about 7 months of sermons. Now I want to add podcasting. I installed the PowerPress plugin and went through the Settings, but I see no place to enter where to tell PowerPress to get the feeds to go in the podcast. Secondly, I do not see any indication where PowerPress will put the items ready for podcasting so I can set up the subscriber link on iTunes. I'm only using PowerPress to do the podcasting. I am not using either the player or in blog links, since that is already done by the site template.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Podcasting is just blogging with a media file attached (video or audio).  You have to have each media file attached to a blog post so that each item is in the feed.

Looking at your site, where the sermons are (individually), if those are blog posts, you need to get the URL to each media file and cut and paste that URL into the Podcast Episode box where it says Media URL.  Hit Verify and save the post. You will need to do that for each episode (sermon).

Then, once that is done, go to the powerpress settings and in the feeds tab you will see your feed address. This is the address you would give to iTunes, Stitcher and any other directory you would like to be listed in.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm completely new at this, so I need a bit more detail. Where is the Podcast Episode Box? The only place I see resembling that is on the Feeds tab as Podcast Feeds, but that is not changeable. Thanks.

When you make or edit a post in wordpress, the podcast episode box will be at the bottom of the post.

See: http://create.blubrry.com/resources/powerpress/using-powerpress/creating-your-first-episode-with-powerpress/

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I never get a Podcast Episode box when I create or edit a sermon. Does this work with Real Church? Do I have to let PowerPress put up the listing and player?

If real church is a theme for wordpress, it will (or should) work.

It may be that the sermon posts are not wordpress POSTS, but some other form.

The only way we will be able to know for sure is to schedule a consulting call with you as this could turn out to be rather custom.

Now l a better idea of what to look for, I think you may be right. If I look at what our theme DashBoard calls Posts, I find an Episode Box in the one post we have put up. I'm currently also talking with the GoodLayers support people to see what they can do. Apparently, Sermons must not have a Post indication. Is the Post designation a necessity currently for PowerPress?

Yes,  It's not just powerpress, but podcasting and RSS feeds in general.  Wordpress will not put anything in an RSS feed if it's not in a POST.

The simplest solution may be for me to simply add a post with the sermon whenever I add a sermon to our website presentatrion. Hopefully that won't add too much data behind the scenes.

That is what you are going to have to do.  You don't have to have that post page on your menu so it will just sit there and do it's job and your normal sermon page will remain the same as it was.

Two things:

1. When I run the feed validator, I get an error. I have included the error. What do I need to do with this?

FEED Validator
FOR ATOM AND RSS AND KML

Congratulations!

[Valid RSS] This is a valid RSS feed.

Recommendations

This feed is valid, but interoperability with the widest range of feed readers could be improved by implementing the following recommendations.

line 2, column 0: Unable to validate namespace: http://www.rawvoice.com/rawvoiceRssModule/. See the RawVoice specification at http://www.rawvoice.com/services/tools-and-resources/rawvoice-rss-2-0-module-xmlns-namespace-rss2/ [help]

<rss version="2.0"
Source: http://agapecc.com/feed/podcast/

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<rss version="2.0"
xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"
xmlns:wfw="http://wellformedweb.org/CommentAPI/"
xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"
xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"
xmlns:sy="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/syndication/"
xmlns:slash="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/"
xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast-1.0.dtd"
xmlns:rawvoice="http://www.rawvoice.com/rawvoiceRssModule/"
>

2. I find that by going to the Custom Post/Category, I can set up podcasting for the Sermon page. Is this true that I can go this way?

For #1... If feed validator says "Congratulations" you are all set.   The Rawvoice namespace error is because they don't know about it.  That site hasn't been updated in years and we added the namespace 2 years ago.  Everyone else understands it so it's not a problem.

#2.  I'm not sure.  I'm not super familiar with custom post types. Maybe Angelo will respond as he is the guru in that area.

I would say try it and let us know :)

Hi Mike,

I think I havew solved my problem. I'm using Post Type Podcasting, which puts an Episode Box in each of my sermons. Once I set it up, now all I have to do is add the URL in the Episode box. I haven't seen any on iTunes yet, but I think I will soon. I can simply go back through my sermon posting and edit by adding the URL in the Episode Box and get everything up to date. Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike,

I'm going to close this subject and start a new one on Post Type Podcasting. I think I may get help quicker that way.

Thanks again,

Terry
