Player randomly stops playing but only in Chrome
« on: November 08, 2013, 03:22:07 am »
1. Are your a paying customer? Yes, podcast statistics
2. Your show name: UnderDiscussion: The Undergopher Podcast
3. Your site URL: http://undergopher.com
4. Your contact email: 8one6@undergopher.com
5. Your feed URL: http://undergopher.com/blog1/category/underdiscussion/feed
6. Details on how you are using the plugin, channels, categories etc:
using MediaElement.js player, site/theme/plugin all up to date. Using category podcasting
7. List any caching or SEO plugins you may be using
I've disabled the caching plugin and am using no SEO plugins, using Google Analytics
8. Your template creator
Currently using Suffusion by Sayontan Sinha

My podcast works in Firefox without issue, it works if you download the file directly (example url: http://undergopher.com/blog1/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Underdiscussion_0141.mp3 ), and it works in iTunes, but when you visit the site in chrome and use the player on the site the episodes will randomly stop playing. Using the one pixle out player it would crash flash in the browser, the rest just stop playing and won't restart without a page refresh.
When I click on the download link in chrome it uses the built in html5 player and runs without issue.
Is there something that I have misconfigured? Is this just a browser issue that I can't fix?
What can I do to fix this?

Tryed the themes Twenty Thirteen, twenty twelve, twenty eleven, and twenty ten but the podcast still stopped playing.

I'm not using a variable bit rate on the episodes, they're all running at 128.
The episodes are being created in Presouns Studio One v2

I used the diagnostic tool, the results are below:

Which player do you have selected?

If it's a flash based player, make sure your flash player plugin is up to date for chrome.   It could be a bug in your chrome browser.  I had no issue here using chrome on a Mac.

I have the site set to use the MediaElement.js player at the moment.
This week's episode seems to stop at about 2:29 or thereabouts in chrome, but in firefox it will keep playing. Some of my listeners are reporting the same thing.

Try switching to another player (one of the flash based ones) and see if you have the same issue.

If you do, there is something up with your media file.  If Not, then there is something wrong with chrome (either a bug in chrome or a bug in your local install of chrome)

I just wanted to chime in and say that I too have experienced the audio freezing in the default media player in Chrome but it works just fine in FireFox. I've done as you've suggested in switching to a Flash based player and things seem to work fine now in both browsers. However, using the flash player is not ideal considering it doesn't work on iOS devices.

We got your back on this one! PowerPress automatically detects mobile devices (Android, iOS, etc..) and only uses the HTML5 embed since no flash will work on mobile.

So this means that if we use the Flash player on the site, those with flash enabled can use the player just fine and those on mobile will be able to still use the player? Which player would that be? The HTML 5 one?

Doesn't matter which player you select. Let me try to explain again...

PowerPress looks at the user agent, if it's iOS, Android, or other mobile, then this is what happens:

Player: HTML5 native player
Fallback: Play image with download link

In all other cases, PowerPress uses the player you select, whether it be one of the flash players, the HTML5 native player, or the MEJS HTML5 player.

We did this in order to provide 100% compatibility. When someone uses PowerPress, they can pick any player, and the media will play no matter what kind of device it is. Being podcasters, that's what we wanted, and that's what everyone should want too.

I understand now. That's a good fallback method you put in there! Nice to know that even with the Flash player, mobile devices see the HTML 5 one instead if they are using iOS.
