Podcast Seasons, Feed, and iTunes
« on: October 10, 2012, 10:53:21 am »
I'm interested in moving my podcast to a "season" model. Instead of posting every other week, doing a series of 10 shows and then taking a break for a while.

I'm curious to hear if/how this has worked for others.

I'm also curious to hear if/how this affects the feed in iTunes. I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that iTunes will stop updating the feed if no new material is posted in x amount of time.

Thanks for your input,
Tripp

iTunes used to delete programs that were inactive after 6 months. I believe since the release this March of the latest iTunes specifications they are no longer doing that and instead, have an option for you to specify in your feed that your show is either "complete" or "block" to let them know to no longer pull your podcast feed. But nothing is written in stone, but I can confirm that my one podcast has been inactive for just over a year and it is still on iTunes. So as long as you maintain the feed you should be fine. If the feed ever went 404 (not found) expect to be removed from iTunes within 4-8 weeks.
