Newbie Help :)
« on: July 01, 2012, 09:33:31 pm »
Hello,

We started a podcast over a year ago...the hard way.  I created an XML file and coded the RSS myself, manually, uploaded to the server, etc.

Then, I found out about WORDPRESS (currently creating the new website) and POWERPRESS.

My question:  how do I bring the old RSS (with my listeners) to the new method (a blog)??

Many more questions probably coming soon :)

Thanks,

Derek

Sounds exactly like this thread: http://forum.blubrry.com/index.php/topic,3588.msg9889.html#msg9889

Just re-create or import your xml feed into your blog, configure PowerPress, then use Static Feed plugin to write your PowerPress podcast only feed over top of your existing xml feed. It all makes sense if you look at the plugin.

Hello,

Thanks for your help.  I tried searching this question but did not come across it.

So I would:

1 - copy my current XML feed over to my new hosting
2 - important it in as a new BLOG?

Appreciate your help,

Derek

Take your XML feed and import it into WordPress.

If you cannot import then you will need to manually create each episode and back date each one.

Re-read this thread: http://forum.blubrry.com/index.php/topic,3588.msg9889.html This person is manually adding blog posts back dating each post with the episodes, then using the Static Feed (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/staticfeed/) plugin to write over top of the old XML file wth the one generated by WordPress and PowerPress.

Hello,

I appreciate the help.  I think I get what you (and the other posts) are saying.

I just do not where you IMPORT the old feed.

Just to be sure:

1 - My old feed was "www.premierpunditry.com/podacst_pp.xml".

2 - I got new a new hosting account and transferred the domain name.

3 - Do I copy the file to my new server space (with the Wordpress blog).

4 - Can I actually keep it in the source directory so it would be the same as above.

5 - Here is where I am stuck.  Not sure how to IMPORT it so the new, WORDPRESS blog, is writing new ones, in the future.

I apologize for bother you.

I usually struggle with the basics and it is probably right in front of me.

:)

Thanks,

Derek

Importing is actually a feature of Wordpress itself, you can google that and find many many examples, its not something that powerpress does, as importing is of itself its own task and plugins.

Hello,

That explains why I could not figure it out using the examples.

With respect to the older shows, the previous posts say you need to manually input them.

If I only wanted to manually input the last 5-10, would my I-Tunes page change (i.e.:  only show those 5-10 and any new posts)?

Really, I only care about NOT losing my listeners.

If my feed (i.e.:  the 200 shows) cannot be brought over, I will not care too much.

Thanks,

Derek

iTunes only displays what's in your feed. iTunes will not de-list you unless your feed is empty for more than 2 weeks, maybe even longer. So a hiccup with your feed isn't going to de-list you from iTunes. But you do want to make sure you use the exact same program title for the feed.

It's common to only show the last 10 to 20 episodes on iTunes.

Hello,

I used a plug-in called RSS IMPORTER, as suggested in a google search on importing the existing RSS feed.

It worked and all the posts appeared in the POSTS tab (and even categorized themselves).  I just have to input the MP3 link using POWER PRESS.

So, I am wondering if I am good to go in your opinion (yes, I am cautious).

Q1 - Will my new posts appear on the I-Tunes feed?
Q2 - I have been reading about FEEDBURNER as well.  In your opinion, should I create an account with FEEDBURNER?  If so, what steps do I need to take with my new blog in WORDPRESS?

I cannot express how much I appreciate your feedback.

Getting started is always tough.

Thanks,

Derek

Avoid feedburner. If you use it and you have a problem you need to contact them for support.

Itunes may see new episodes if the guid for each episode is different than before. But if you do this all at once, it will only notice a new episode once. Sometimes the best thing is to migrate over, and immediately after create a new episode.

Hello,

RE: NEW POST
I will try a new post (podcast) later this week and see what happens with I_Tunes.

RE:  FEEDBURNER
I appreciate another opinion.

Q1 - So how do listeners subscribe to our podcast via the new WORDPRESS blog?  I used to have an RSS button that brought them to the feed to subscribe.

Starting to become clearer.

Thanks,

Derek

If you use the Static Feed plugin as I said before, you can use the samel exact file/URL you were using previously for your feed. Otherwise yes you will need to use the WordPress provided feed.

Also, for podcasting use the podcast only feed noticed in PowerPress settings. Using the WordPress default feed is limiting for podcasting as it also includes blog posts (iTunes ignores these).

Hello,

RE:  PODCAST ONLY FEED
Are you referring to the second options below (under the feed tab in Power Press)?

Enhance All Feeds (Recommended)
- Allows for Category Podcasting (Visitors may subscribe to your categories as a podcast)
- Allows for Tag/Keyword Casting (Visitors may subscribe to your tags as a podcast)

Enhance Main Feed Only
Adds podcasting support to your main feed only

Do Not Enhance Feeds
- Feed Settings below will only apply to your podcast channel feeds

No, go to the "iTunes" tab and see the feed URL recommended for iTunes.

Hello,

OK, I uploaded a test show to see if it will go on I-Tunes.  So far, nothing.

Do I have to do anything with my original XML file?

It is not on my new server space.

Thanks for your help (getting nervous) :)
