I have 36 podcasts episodes and none of them are showing up on iTunes. I use archive.org to host the files. They usually show up on iTunes for a couple of weeks and then they disappear.

The site is: http://drumchattr.com/
The iTunes ID: id387631649
The Podcast feed is: http://drumchattr.com/feed/podcast/

I know we are doing something wrong, but I can't figure out how to change it. Please help.

Thanks!
Dave

Looking up 387631649, it looks like you gave iTunes your main blog feed (http://drumchattr.com/feed/), not your podcast only feed. This is why we recommend only using your podcast only feed when submitting your podcast to directories such as iTunes. If you look at your regular blog feed, your blog posts have pushed all your episodes off the feed so they're no longer there.

I don't have a clean solution to this problem. You can do a redirect of your blog feed to the podcast feed, but then your blog reader subscribers will negatively be impacted. You can use the iTunes new feed URL option, but that will not solve all the other podcatching apps or directories, it only solves the iTunes subscribers. You can't increase the feed size much larger either, once your feed is really large services like iTunes stop pulling them.

You're going to have to decide which is more important, your blog posts in the feed or your podcast episodes in the feed.

Thanks so much for the reply!

If I understand this correctly, if I change the iTunes feed to http://drumchattr.com/feed/podcasts, the iTunes feed will pick up the past podcasts? I think most of our listeners come from iTunes, so I don't think it will be effect many of the blog readers. But, why would this change effect the other podcatchers? Is it because they have the URL as http://drumchattr.com/feed/? It may be a little work, but maybe we can contact the other directories and get the URL changed.

Thanks!
DG

There are over 100 known podcastchers and directories. You will have your work cut out for you if you wnat to update them all directly.

So three solutions (I would only recommend the first two, the 3rd is what you proposed).

  • 301 Redirect feed from http://drumchattr.com/feedto http://drumchattr.com/feed/podcasts - This handles all podcatchers and directories in one action.
  • iTunes New Feed URL option for the main feed - This only handles the iTunes podcast directory, doesn't deal with the other podcatchers and directories. (better solution but not ideal)
  • Update all the podcast directories. This will not update anyone who already subscribed in a podcatcher (or even say Google Reader).

You could do a hybrid of these options. You could do 2 and 3, and also create a new episode that is newer than all your blog posts so it appears in your main feed that basically says "Hey if your subscribed, I need you to resubscribe as the feed URL has changed, go to blah blah blah".

Thanks so much for the help! Next question, how do I do a 301 redirect? I am new to this and I am not sure how to accomplish that.

Thanks!

This may help: http://www.podcastfaq.com/syndicating-your-podcast/changing-your-podcast-rss-feed-address-url/

Your situation though you will want to consult with a web developer / server admin experienced with ModRewrite, since your doing the redirection to the same server you need to make sure you don't get into an endless loop.

I really appreciate all of your help with this! Blubrry.com is a great service and I will definitely tell everyone about the great customer service we are receiving. Thanks!

I think we are just going to do a new feed for iTunes. We are going to put up a message on http://drumchattr.com/feed/ that we are going to create a new podcast feed for all podcasts. I think that will be the easiest and then we can delete the old feed from iTunes next month.

So, next question, how do we create a new feed for our podcasts only? Is that something that the Blubrry plug in does?

Thanks!
Dave

Thanks!

iTunes wants you to keep the redirect in place for 2 weeks to a month minimum. Technically I would leave it in place indefinitely, or perhaps 3-6 months.

Already there, go to the PowerPress settings, it will recommend what feed to submit to iTunes in the iTunes tab.

OK, I did the redirect and it messed up the RSS readers.

So, I think we should just delete the iTunes podcast and start over. I don't think we have enough listeners to worry about.

Please advise.

Thanks!

You could do that. Just keep in mind that your new podcast you submit to iTunes will need a slightly different title, iTunes doesn't allow podcast program titles to be identical.

You have to contact Apple.com.

Ok, one final question... We are canceling the podcast now. Does Blubrry.com create the new URL feed for our new podcast (once I create it on iTunes) or does iTunes do it automatically?

I know these are simple questions, but I am new to this whole thing! Thanks!
