iTunes Not Accepting Feed - FEED Validator Says it is Valid.
« on: April 23, 2012, 07:37:49 am »
Hey guys - tried looking through the forum to see what was wrong here is what I have checked:

1. I don't have any folders named feed, or podcasts.
2. Attempted to submit feed from another computer.
3. When I need to manually download the feed from iTunes it works.  I just cannot submit it.

Here is the error I get (down below)

Anyone have any solutions?  I just want to get this thing on iTunes and am close to just going the Feedburner route.  I do use feedburner for my main RSS but it is NOT setup for podcasting.

I appreciate any help you guys can offer!

-Dan

Your podcast feed title is way too complicated. Definitely remove the special character |, iTunes has never approved a podcast with special characters in the titles. I would also come up with a better more unique title. If your title includes the title of another existing podcast on iTunes, they may also reject it. I do see a podcast already on iTunes titled "Reality TV Podcast", which is found in your podcast title. iTunes is trying to protect themselves from copyright issues and to provide support for confusing/overlapping program titles.

Hmm, any other ideas, here is a Podcast that also has those "Special Characters" in it's title:

Well guys, I'm stumped.  I also took out the "|" characters from the Title.  Still no dice.  Open to any other suggestions!

I am mistaken, you can have | characters, in the past characters like that have been a problem. I apologize.

Apple is more aggressive with names of podcasts as of the past couple of years, used to be they wouldn't allow duplicate titles, now in some cases they do not allow podcasts to include some words to protect copyrights.

Just to double check, you are putting the http:// in front of the URL when you submit it to iTunes correct?

I saw you were told to use FeedBurner on Twitter. FeedBurner doesn't tell you as much as it used to because of the way feed consumption has changed in the past 2-4 years. You can learn more about FeedBurner and podcasting here: http://www.podcastfaq.com/syndicating-your-podcast/feedburner-for-podcasting/

Furthermore, FeedBurner can track feed activity when they are viewed in HTML form, but that doesn't apply to podcast readers and mobile devices, so for a podcast only feed FeedBurner is nearly pointless.

The one good use of FeedBurner is if you have a cheap $4/month hosting plan and you want to mitigate your traffic to your server, but the cost of that is no longer having the feed URL under your domain/control. Switching feeds later is a real headache.ne other thing, if you end up using FeedBurner, we'll no longer be able to assist you as that service is not provided by us.

Who is providing your web hosting? If both FeedBurner and iTunes cannot access your server (timeout) then the problem doesn't have anything to do with the content in the feed, it has to do with those servers not being able to access your server. An endless number of things can cause this, including aggressive firewall settings, or even a rogue plugin in WordPress that only accepts certain user agents.

I am having the same problems. For 2+ weeks iTS did not update my latest 2 episodes and I'm still waiting.... we had no problems for almost a year with our weekly podcast. I emailed Apple finally yesterday and they responded quickly with a link to Feed Validator.... but though there were some warnings, there were no errors. I will post a more thorough explanation on a separate thread.

CMP, is your podcast already listed on iTunes? This particular thread is for folks who are having issues trying to submit a new podcast to iTunes. We do have a solution for this feed submission problem, we found out last month that there are some recent versions of the desktop software that do not support the direct web link to submit a podcast. Instead you have to load the desktop iTunes app, and manually navigate to the add podcast section. Apple is aware of the problem and will hopefully have it fixed in future desktop versions of iTunes.

If your podcast is already on iTunes and your listing is just not updating, then there maybe any number of reasons. Rather than going through 25 different scenarios, please reply with the URL to your feed and the URL to your podcast listing on iTunes and we'll take a closer look.

The most popular problem though is the use of a WP caching plugin that adds HTML style comments at the very bottom of the feed. Even though FeedValidator.org doesn't have a problem with it, we know for a fact that iTunes doesn't like it and will not update if there's <!-- ... --> stuff at the bottom of the feed.
