Combating Feed Thievery
« on: March 13, 2007, 09:21:53 pm »
It seems to me that the scoundrels who republish feed content on splogs are getting stronger. We're starting to get more reports of people who find these weird sites linking back to their blogs.

When the podcaster investigates they find out that entire posts are being slurped up by these sites which link to things like porn and online gambling sites.

RSS being the way it is, this is very hard to defend against. One technique involves adding a copyright signature that leads people who find these splogs back to the rightful content owner.

There is a WordPress plugin that handles this signature called Sig2Feed. Sig2Feed allows you to add a customizable signature to your RSS feed that will appear for each post. You can get the plugin at http://www.smackfoo.com/plugins/sig2feed/.

Ha - I had a situation that we were being linked to from (name removed) large cruise company.  It seems that we had a least several fans from their company that enjoyed our podcasts and a recent review they got, and made our podcast page the homepage of the terminals on board!  Ha!

I do agree that the count of sites that you reference IS getting way out of hand, especially those that are linked to that are not in engilsh, which means that is finding out "what its being listed as/to" is essentially impossible.  I don't have a fix there, but I look forward to someone chiming in on it.
